House With Eaves And An Attic

 Back to Projects list
Location
Bunkyo-Ku, Tokyo
Year
2011

This area has many slopes, and more than half of the area of this site is covered by a cliff. Sloping land has often been left untouched since long ago, and many trees remain on the site. The client requested that as many trees as possible be left on the site to carry on the memory of the land. Another request was to consider the line of sight from the mid-rise buildings that are densely built below the cliff.

Therefore, in order to preserve the memory of the land on the cliff, we decided to avoid the cliff and place the building on the flat part of the site (approximately 16m x 4.5m). We also attempted to control the view from the building below the cliff by installing a large roof with a slope almost the same as that of the cliff. The eaves of the large roof extend to block the view from the outside on the first floor, which is the space under the eaves, and lead the view from the inside to the cliff. The shrubbery is brought into the interior and the tall trees penetrate the roof, creating an organic relationship between the cliff and the architecture. On the second floor, the back of the shed, a window slanted to match the slope of the roof is placed above eye level, blocking the view from the outside and allowing only the greenery of the tall trees that penetrate the roof and the sky to enter the room. While windows are placed under the eaves and behind the shed, the middle floor is a storage space with no windows at all.
