Kondo House
Tokyo / Japan, 2008 Description
This building is composed of a pair of steel frames, onto which are hung outer walls and the second-story floor. Using this construction method allowed us to eliminate posts from the interior space and to alter the height of the floor on the second story, so that it seems to be softly floating within the structure. On the first floor, a raised c-shaped border partitions off one area as an independent space. Glass boxes set inside this space form two courtyard gardens, one large and one small. The relationship between the garden and the first-story floor fluctuates, with the floor penetrating the garden in some places and the garden sitting on top of the floor in others. The gardens invite light and air into the structure, gently partitioning the unified interior space. |
