Meilo Hotex
Tokyo / Japan, 2005
Description
The basic architectural design, a glass box surrounded by a wal.
The name "Meilo" means "maze" in japanese. An hotel should be a space to be discovered, an unique personal experience. The meilo hotel is a place that reveal unexpected emotion , unseen space.
The space is created with always in mind the experience of the customer, the surprise of the facade, the size of the lobby , the apparent complexity that trigger the imagination (what the rooom look like), the narrow space of the restaurant corridor that opens into a maze of restaurant. When visiting a ryokan the apparent complexity of the space, the movement of the customer within the interior is an important part of the japansese hospitality. A straight way is not the most enjoyable way.
The meilo hotel is an urban ryokan, the architecture is specifically designed to be an hotel, the different villas are placed in three dimensions, creating the apparent complexity of the architecture. When you are having dinner in the restaurant space placed under the huge stone sculpture, you can see your room in one of the volume above you. The long corridor with number 1006 does not exist anymore. The different parts of the hotel, restaurants, rooms, lobby are not designed within the architecture but create the architecture itself.
