Kazuhiro Yajima's Umbrella City

Saitama-based architect Kazuhiro Yajima has a passion for roofs. Here he experiments with the concept of umbrella as both roof and structure. Yajima sent couples out into the city sharing 108 inverted umbrellas which could be hung by the handle from various objects in the city, freeing the hands of their carriers for a quick hug beneath their temporary roof.  The exhibits features the inverted umbrellas themselves as well as photographs of them in use. In a workshop on June 23, participants will hear Yajima speak about the project and then venture out into the city to photograph one another trying out the umbrellas.
